Worst Run Ever

January 27th, 2007

Despite getting a new geek toy for running, today was probably my worst run yet.

It started off good, good pace, felt good, and after the first mile went south really fast. I think it was a lot of things combined. I just started wearing new shoes, and while they are almost exactly the same type, they are not completely broke in yet, making my feet hot, and legs not feel all that great. It was also the first time since I've started training that I ran when it was light out. Sun and about 20 degrees warmer, make for a completely different run, plus there were all kinds of people I had to dodge. I also did not really eat much before running, which normally isn't all that bad, just combined with the other two led to the downfall.

My new toy is pretty slick in that it breaks down almost everything for you, I have it set to auto-lap when I complete a mile, and then it gives me my last miles pace, you can see them broke down here:

It wasn't all that bad of a pace, and was almost my normal "light" day running amount, but it was the first time I had to take a 100 ft break, and then I ended it early.

My 10K is in less than a week, and it's at 7:30 am, somehow I need to get myself used to running in the earlier mornings, instead of at 11pm at night. This week I'm going to try to do a few lights runs in the morning, hopefully my 10K goes better than this.

All legitimate progress is nonlinear, so take heart. Also, if you are sincere about targeting 1,000 miles this year you need to back off the pace. Seriously. You should be running about 20% more per week by year end than now and that means you should be behind, not ahead, of pace to hit 1,000. There. I’m done with the avuncular role.

    Yeah, I agree.

I think I narrowed it down to what was causing the issue though. I switched to different shoes, and they just aren’t working out, or aren’t breaking in fast enough, regardless I’m going to wear my old ones for my 10k this weekend.

As far as the 1,000 goal, I came into it with a base of about 18-20 miles a week, and I haven’t really jumped up all that much from that pace, in fact this week it’s going down (in preparation for the 10K).
