Thai Iced Tea: Part 1

May 25th, 2007

I decided to make some Thai Iced Tea's at home.

That means I needed some ingredients/tools:
-- Thai Tea Mix/Powder - Tea leaves that have star anise, cinnamon, vanilla.
-- Half/Half or Milk or Sweet & Condensed Milk or Heavy Whipping Cream
-- Big Pot
-- Sugar

It's really like making normal tea, except you're doing it on a lot larger scale. It also has a lot of actual tea leaves in it. I boiled one cup of tea mix with six cups of water. After some awkward filtering/straining (have to figure out a better way to do this), I added a cup of sugar. Next you refrigerate the tea, and then service over ice with a few tablespoons of cream/milk/etc. You can also add flavor syrup of some sort (vanilla/mango/etc).

Mine turned out pretty well, although it was a bit too sweet. There are a lot of recipes out there (like this one from the Food Network) which all seem to be pretty close. The recipe I followed said one cup of sugar, the food network recipe (linked previously) calls for 3/4 of a cup, which would probably be much better.

On to the pictures:

That's a lot of tea:

Looks like nasty mud:

I don't have any photos of the end result yet (that's why this is only part 1) I also have not done one of the best parts of this drink -- the tapioca. Once I get the big straws (and feel like posting part 2), I'll cook them up:
Next Time: Boba

Update: These contain a lot of caffeine. If you drink say...two big glasses of tea....at 7pm...you'll probably be up all night.

I don’t think I’ve ever had Thai Iced Tea. It looks like charcoal.
