Conserve: Stop Wasting Electricity and Gas
November 6th, 2006This is my public service post, from me to you.
We waste a lot of electricity and gas. I’m not talking about leaving your fan on accidently for a day, or the heater a few degrees hotter, although that is wasteful also. I’m talking about appliances/electronics that when appear to be off are still consuming electricity.
For some reason I made this my new vendetta. I purchased a Kill-A-Watt and went around my apartment looking for things using too much electricity. A stereo system/speakers/misc other things plugged in to an outlet was consuming 32 watts of electricity when off, now that may not sound like much, but that in San Diego electric prices is around $6 a month. I also realized (duh) that sleeping my computer when I was never at it, saved around $5-10 a month (this may be more depending on the type of computer you have). Lastly when I realized my gas bill had been higher than I thought it should have been a few times, I found out my gas heater had a pilot light. Just by turning this pilot light off, probably will cut my gas bill down by $5 a month.
Now you probably think, well I don’t care enough to save $20 a month, however even beyond that, is we are simply wasting a lot of electricity/gas. Parasitic losses that we almost never get any gains for, yet we pay for not only but in money, but in dependence.
My electric bill was $12 last month, that includes my whole apartment.
